#1 UNDERSTANDING THE TRANS EURO TRAIL (TET) IN SPAIN
TET Spain is part of the well-known Trans Euro Trail 4×4, an exciting project designed to explore Europe via off-road tracks—but it was originally created for trail motorcycles.
Although the route is spectacular—and even shares some sections with the Trans-Pyrenean—it spans the entire country with a much longer and more varied itinerary. As a result, each TET Spain section can feel disconnected from the next.
In addition, some parts may not be suitable for larger vehicles, and completing the entire route in the same season isn’t always the best idea—due to snow in the northern mountains or extreme heat in the south.
#2 WHAT IS THE TRANS-PYRENEAN (GR11) 4X4 ROUTE?
The Trans-Pyrenean 4×4 route is significantly shorter—around 1,500 kilometres—but it closely follows the iconic GR11 trail, one of Europe’s most famous long-distance mountain routes.
This gives the route a much clearer focus, staying consistently in mid- and high-mountain terrain while showcasing some of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Spain. It also brings key advantages: a well-defined travel season (summer), more high-altitude passes, and some of the best wild camping spots in the country.
Despite its shorter distance, this Pyrenees off-road crossing takes you through four regions of Spain and even into Andorra and France—ensuring a rich variety of landscapes, gastronomy, and mountain villages throughout the journey.

#4 WHY THE TRANS-PYRENEAN IS BETTER FOR A 4X4 ADVENTURE

#5 PLANNING YOUR TRIP: LOGISTICS AND LEGALITY
Driving in the Pyrenees should be a carefree experience, but “thanks” to Spanish off-road regulations, it’s essential to understand the basic rules to avoid fines.
There are mainly two situations you need to be aware of: restricted or paid tracks (usually clearly signposted at the entrance), and camping restrictions (commonly within natural parks or protected areas).
Important: in Spain, wild camping with a 4×4 or camper is not allowed. However, overnight stays are generally tolerated as long as you are not in clearly prohibited areas.
#6 CONCLUSION: WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU DRIVE?
For us, the answer is clear: if you’re riding a trail motorcycle or driving an extreme 4×4 setup, TET Spain is a great option for technical riding. But if you want to enjoy the best landscapes, scenic tracks, and the true overland and camping experience with your camper or 4×4, then the Trans-Pyrenean is the best choice for you.
